You will be working with unique data, not seen elsewhere in defence, to the backdrop of a macro environment that is ever changing.
Some of the challenges you will face include working with diverse military and civilian teams to support the secure, discrete, and legal acquisition and use of data to enable military activities, along with the support of operations and development of cutting-edge capabilities.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
Data governance is at the heart of unlocking the potential of data, by monitoring, standardising and enforcing data management techniques.
This role will work with our architecture, delivery and operational policy teams to ensure that users have access to the data they need. They will work across the MOD, partners across government and allies to ensure that we have the legal basis to acquire and exploit data, as well as maintain the confidence of our regulatory bodies.
Specific tasks could include:
- Catalogue, monitor and identify data assets that are essential to the organisation’s operations or services
- Assign ownership of data, ensuring there is a clear RACI (responsible, accountable, consulted and informed) matrix in the organisation
- Incorporate governance of data into routine, critical processes
- Support or manage risk processes around data
- Advocate for better use and management of data within the organisation
- Implement data literacy uplift within the organisation
- Have a broad understanding of the legalities of data, ensuring these are embedded within data policy
Person specification
A data governance manager defines, implements and manages data governance frameworks, policies and standards.
You will:
- Work on the design and implementation of practical data governance solutions to support organisational needs, whilst gaining exposure to data architecture practices
- Develop a wide network across MOD, government and partner data professionals
- Identify opportunities and make recommendations to improve the quality and trustworthiness of data throughout the organisation
- Implement and establish wider data management competencies within the organisation (such as data quality, metadata management, master data management, data modelling, and development of data standards and data strategy)
- Apply data governance to optimise the safety and value of data throughout the data life cycle
- Work within the organisation to minimise data risks and increase data literacy
You should have a working level of the below skills:

Strategic Command is going through a significant transformation programme which aims to improve the way the Command conducts its business and delivers for Defence and the nation. As a consequence of this, all posts within Strategic Command Headquarters and in time the wider organisation, are/will be subject to review and potential changes as we continuously improve across the period of the transformation programme. These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities. Throughout, the Command’s transformation programme is committed to following the MOD’s framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Command’s personnel and Trade Unions.
Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
